International Driving Permit for Indian licence holders
How to get an International Driving Permit if your driving licence was issued in India.
Indian IDPs are issued by the RTO and typically require an application in person along with medical and passport documentation. Indian licences vary a lot in format between states, which is exactly the situation a clear multilingual translation is meant to resolve at a foreign rental desk.
The official route from India
Under the UN Road Traffic Conventions, an officially issued International Driving Permit can only be obtained in the country that issued your national licence, from a body that country's government has authorised. In India that is the Regional Transport Office (RTO) that issued your licence, via the Parivahan portal.
Use that route if you have been told specifically that you need a government-recognised IDP, or if you are dealing with a licensing authority. It is the document with formal standing under the Conventions.
